Module # 1: Assignment # 1: Blog Setup & Data Visualization Analysis

I chose this visualization because I came across it online a couple of weeks ago and found it genuinely interesting, especially in how it measures and compares what makes a state “good” for raising a family. One detail that stood out to me was that Florida was ranked somewhat higher than I expected. This caught my attention because I grew up in California and later moved to Florida, so seeing the comparison between states felt personally relevant.

I think this visualization was made by a human designer using a tool called Data wrapper, rather than being fully generated by AI. Data wrapper is a known tool that lets people create maps and charts from data by choosing things like colors, legends, and titles, kind of like Tableau. Because someone has to actually decide how the data is laid out and how it’s presented, it feels much more like a human-designed visualization than something automatically generated by AI.

 For this assignment I created a histogram in R using the built in mtcars dataset to show the distribution of miles per gallon (mpg). The visualization makes it easy to see that most cars fall between about 15 and 25 mpg, with only a few vehicles above 30 mpg. This fits with Few’s and Yau’s discussion on basic descriptive visualization because it focuses on clarity and simplicity rather than decoration. The chart communicates one clear message about the spread of the data and avoids unnecessary visual elements. Overall, it works well as a basic example of descriptive analysis in R.

Basically, Set #2 looks like Set #1 just shifted up by about 10 points. The spread is the same in both sets though. They have the exact same range, IQR, variance, and standard deviation.
